2 – Re-enter the Community
Continuing on from the last suggestion of Engaging in a Useful Activity, it is helpful to try to take things slowly at first. If you decided to do a bit of spring cleaning or learn a new hobby like painting or playing a musical instrument, please take baby-steps and go at an easy pace.
There is however a need to re-engage with society, even though it is not exactly as you may remember it. If you suffer from anxiety, you can find yourself over-whelmed by the changes that have taken place in your community, so if you can stay in contact with neighbours, family and friends, and ask them what is different, this will be useful in which to explore your concerns with these people. Ask for any information on what has changed in your community.
Questions to ask could be: Do I have to wear a mask to visit shops? Where can I get a mask? Do I need to wear gloves or a face shield? Can I use cash or a cheque book? What is the safe distance to stay away from people? Are buses still running? Can I get a taxi without wearing a mask?
Being prepared for a journey back into the community, after many months of absence, can be so challenging, and even being seen by other’s who appear to know what they are doing, can make you more anxious. I think you would agree that it is more positive to be prepared for this journey if you have had advice by your contacts on what to expect.
If you are going out for the first time since lockdown, would it be possible if one of your contacts could accompany you to the shops?
People are generally only too willing to help others in need, so ask.
