Recently, while working in collaboration with an Edinburgh charity, get2gether, to provide a relax in nature walk, we decided on a location a few miles from Edinburgh city centre, which is aptly named Saughton Rose Gardens. Even at the end of the season there were still a few roses in bloom; it was evident that the local community who tended this area, had done a remarkable job producing healthy plants and flowers amongst beautifully landscaped gardens.

I was surprised to see a statue of Gandhi as we entered at the East gate.
The beautifully managed gardens that met us as we wandered throughout the area was surreal, as a half mile in all directions, you would find a city which was bustling with traffic and people going about their business.

It was very quiet where we were, perhaps the high hedges and trees sheltered us from any outside noise. Perfect for some Mindfulness exercises to help us relax and enjoy each others’ company.

Weather was cold but still pleasant and the sun made an appearance now and again which added to our enjoyable walk.
We stopped to admire the Thistles growing

Some of the group needed a rest, including me, and we spotted a Bandstand, with plenty of seating and good access for wheelchairs.

We walked some more and everyone felt relaxed as people started to get to know each other. No-one judged anyone, as we were all there for the same reason; to find friendship.

There were other areas of the gardens which we didn’t have time to explore this visit, but will return to the garden in the future.
Everyone entered the Café for a well deserved drink and snack, and a chance to look back on the experience of the day.

We met up as individuals and left as friends, as once again the relaxation techniques used helped to improve self awareness and an increase in confidence.

get2gether is a Scottish Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) charity which offers social and friendship opportunities to adults with disabilities in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
There will be a follow up visit in early 2025 to the same location, which will be posted here.
Take care
Steve

Did you see any Yew trees there? We visited Edinburgh in 2019 but never saw this garden, or we would have went to it. We saw many notable sites though. Love it there.
