Looking to improve your overall wellbeing, please read on and learn about the positive relationship between birdsong and helping to decrease anxiety and negative thoughts.
When was the last time you stopped what you were doing to observe and listen to our feathered friends? No matter where you are in the world, we share our space with over 50 billion birds, consisting of 11,000 species.
How can birds help improve our Mental Health and Wellbeing? Well, listening to birdsong is an option. It promotes a sense of freedom, and re-balancing your life; imagining being up there in the trees, singing with the birds, soaring and flying high above. A few minutes of escaping from life here on earth sounds good!
Visualisations of being a bird in song.

How do you feel after listening to this? There has been lots of academic studies into the relation between birdsong and improving health for humans, over the last few decades. Personally, when I hear birdsong, I wonder what they are singing about, and I get a few looks from passers by for standing still staring at trees.
That is the point though, that the majority of us, walk on, without stopping to listen to the birdsong. We are all so busy in our lives to stop and listen to nature around us.
If you knew that birdsong improves your health, would you listen to it more?
Birdsong also gives us a sense of wellness. In a study conducted by King’s College in London, for instance, participants who listened to five minutes of birdsong in a studio, reported lower blood pressure and a feeling of peace that lasted for up to four hours. That kind of medication is exactly what we all need.
Additionally, researchers at the University of Surrey, in the UK, found that most people who were exposed to intricate noises and melodic birds felt happier and calmer.
You can experience improvements in your health by listening to Birdsong pre-recorded, using headphones to cut out distractions. The birdsong can reduce negative thoughts and behaviours, and this strategy can be used to treat depression and anxiety.
Here at Change Therapy, we have tried this form of therapy out and the results have been very positive indeed. Closing your eyes shortly after clicking the play button enhances the experience.

Birds are everywhere around the world; in cities, towns, on the coast and countryside, yet their presence is largely ignored. If you get a chance to stop and look at the sky, do you often wonder what it would be like to fly free in the sky?
Watch as they soar high up and dive down, moving in tandem as groups in formation, and when the land, you can hear various birds singing.
More broadly, other studies confirm the general advantages of spending time outdoors in nature, which result in increased happiness, self-worth, and life satisfaction. The natural world is revitalising and reviving.
