Breathing – Mindfully

Why not take 6 minutes out of your day, to try out some Mindful Breathing?

Make yourself comfortable sitting or lying down, close your eyes and listen to my audio track.

If you don’t have time right now, the contents of the audio go along these lines:

When you breath air in, you feel and sense the oxygen entering your body, then you breath out the used air. This process of breathing is natural, and one we never really stop to think about. When was the last time you fully concentrated on your breathing?

Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. If you can.

The purpose of this exercise is to simply notice, accept and be aware of your breath.

Allow yourself to bring all of your attention to the physical act of breathing. Start to notice the breath as it enters your body through your nose and travels to your lungs. Notice with curiosity whether the inward and outward breaths are cool or warm air?

And notice where the breath travels as it enters and departs. Also notice the breath as your lungs relax and you inhale through your nose.

If your mind wanders, allow this to happen and gently bring it back to the present. Focus on your breathe and your mind will follow!

Don’t try to do anything with your breathing – simply notice it, pay attention to it and be aware of it. It doesn’t matter if your breathing is slow or fast, deep or shallow; you breath in a  comfortable way to you. Allow your body to do what it does naturally.

Again, don’t try to do anything – just be aware of the physical sensations of breathing in and breathing out.

If you find that other thoughts intrude, this is okay. Don’t worry, just notice these thoughts, allow them to be, and gently bring your awareness back to your breathe. And breath…..PAUSE

We will return to the room shortly, where you can open your eyes and have a stretch…..Breathing in and out…..

And open your eyes…gently stretching as you become aware of your surroundings.

Feel free to stand up and stretch. Well done for completing this exercise, which is a key part of Mindfulness.

Thanks for your time.

  1. I like this, in fact I like it a lot, Steve. Having the audio right up front draws you right in. And with the text too – it works really well. Great post.
