Autobiography In 5 Short Chapters.

Every so often I come across a gem of a story or poem that I want to share, in the hope that it will help someone to change their life for the better.

This particular poem is timeless, and one that has helped many people that I know over the years. I hope that you enjoy this too.

“Autobiography In Five Short Chapters”

Chapter One

I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I fall in.

I am lost … I am hopeless.

It isn’t my fault.

It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter Two

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don’t see it.

I fall in again.

I can’t believe I’m in the same place.

But it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter Three

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it is there.

I still fall in … it’s a habit.

My eyes are open.

I know where I am.

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

Chapter Four

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

Chapter Five

I walk down another street.

Changing our attitudes and behaviours take time, yet the first step to make a leap to breaking this cycle, is to recognise that you need some help. Changing your mindset, to begin positive thinking, and removing old habits can be challenging, as you exit your comfort zone. Involve friends and/or family by asking for their input and guidance to support you in your journey of self-discovery. Perhaps you know of someone that you could share this with?  {Self-discovery enhances relationships, communication, and self-esteem by assisting people in accepting who they are and the reasons behind their actions.}

Take care

Steve

It was originally written by Portia Nelson in her book: There’s a Hole in My Sidewalk: The Romance of Self-Discovery – (1977).
